TRAMA

La vita, l'arte, la musica del celebre pianista classico e compositore canadese Glenn Gould (1932-82) in 32
brevi capitoli in cui si passa dal documentario alla finzione, dal disegno animato (Norman McLaren) alle interviste.
Impersonato da un attore (C. Feore, ma anche da tre bambini di tre, otto e dodici anni), Gould non compare mai, ma se ne
ascoltano le esecuzioni, discusso frutto di un perfezionismo maniacale che lo indusse, nel 1964, a ritirarsi
dall'attività in pubblico. La struttura è quella delle “Variazioni Goldberg” (30 + 2 arie) di Johann
Sebastian Bach, che segnarono l'esordio discografico di Gould nel 1955 e che l'artista ripeté soltanto nel 1981, un
anno prima della morte.
Tre elementi ne costituiscono l'ossatura: la musica, il Grande Nord e la radio, i tre
grandi amori del musicista. Ma non è trascurata la sua ipocondria. Genio o soltanto un eccentrico nevrotico di
talento? Girard lascia libero lo spettatore di farsi un'opinione: suggerisce, non afferma; mostra, non dimostra. Non
è un film autoritario né agiografico né celebrativo. Come "Wittgenstein" di Derek Jarman, propone un modo nuovo
di fare biografia al cinema.

PLOT

As the title suggests,
this dramatised documentary about the eccentric Canadian pianist Glenn Gould is broken up into thirty-two short films
(mirroring the thirty-two part structure of Bach's 'Goldberg Variations', the recording that Gould made famous), each
giving us an insight into some aspect of Gould's life and career. Out of respect for the music, lead actor Colm Feore is
never seen playing the piano, merely reacting to Gould's own recordings, which are extensively featured.
